In a nutshell, Bikram Yoga is Hatha Yoga practiced through a specific 26 posture sequence over 90 minutes, often referred to as ‘The Original Hot Yoga’ practiced around 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Below you will find three (3) different graphics with the entire 26 Pose sequence. These postures are practiced 2X in 90 minutes.
Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class is a twenty-six asana series designed to scientifically warm and stretch muscles, ligaments and tendons, in the order in which they should be stretched.
Sitting on top of the world, then came ‘the controversy’. Bikram Choudhury, the founder of Bikram Yoga, placed himself as the subject of civil suits alleging sexual assault and discrimination against racial and sexual minorities.
In 2017, a court awarded $7 million to his former lawyer, Minakshi Jafa-Boden, who gained control of his yoga business when Choudhury fled to India without paying her. Since then he has continued to train yoga teachers outside the United States in countries including Spain and Mexico. By many accounts, he is considered still ‘on the lam’ aka ‘in escape status’.
The is also a documentary called ‘Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator’ which you can watch on Netflix. It is believed that Bikram Choudhury is now on the run from creditors, hiding from an arrest warrant and trapped in Mexico.
